Scientific name:
Armeria canescens (Host) Ebel
Common name:
Hoary Thrift
Family:
Plumbaginaceae

Curiosities:

A perennial species typical of Central-Eastern Europe and the Balkan region, occurring in mountainous and rocky environments between 800 and 2300 m, especially in Greece and the Balkans. It is a tufted plant characterized by basal rosettes of leaves and dense flower heads, often pink or white, borne on long leafless stems. Its morphology varies considerably, showing phenotypic plasticity related to soil, altitude and climate, as also highlighted by morphometric and genetic studies suggesting possible hybridization with related species. It prefers full sun and well-drained substrates, which is why it is sometimes cultivated in rock gardens or used as an ornamental ground cover, appreciated for its drought resistance and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
