The Fireweed of Rebirth

Scientific name:
Chamaenerion angustifolium (L.) Scop.
Common name:
Fireweed
Family:
Onagraceae

Curiosities:

A quintessential pioneer species, it is among the first plants to reappear on burned or disturbed soils, rapidly colonizing thanks to its numerous feathery seeds. It blooms in summer with long pink-purple spikes that attract pollinators along forest edges and mountain clearings above 1000 m. In various European traditions, it was considered a plant of “rebirth”, symbolizing life returning after fire, while in many mountain areas its young shoots were eaten as a spring vegetable.
