The Purple Linaria of the Apennines

Scientific name:
Linaria purpurea (L.) Mill.
Common name:
Purple Toadflax
Family:
Plantaginaceae

Curiosities:

Endemic to central-southern Italy, this species is typical of cliffs, screes and woodland edges, reaching even the highest Apennine peaks (up to 2500 m). Its long racemes of violet flowers make it widely appreciated as an ornamental plant, and it has spread beyond Italy through cultivation. Its slender form and almost continuous flowering (April–October) often earn it the nickname “rock spike”, symbolizing the resilience and adaptability of Italian endemic flora to arid environments.
