The Hidden Flower of Mountain Shadows
Scientific name:
Scrophularia scopolii Hoppe ex Pers.
Common name:
Scopoliās Figwort
Family:
Scrophulariaceae
Curiosities:
A species of mountain and submontane habitats, known for its mild toxicity, typical of many Scrophulariaceae, which has limited its use in folk medicine. Nevertheless, in Balkan and Alpine traditions it was sometimes used as a topical remedy for skin inflammation due to its saponin-rich compounds. It is named after the naturalist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, a key figure in 18th-century botany. Ecologically, it attracts specialized pollinators such as certain wasps and flies thanks to its unusual flowers, and grows in woodland edges and moist clearings.
