Characteristics

Habit: Perennial tufted herb up to 150 cm. Stems cylindrical, flexible, glaucous. Leaves reduced to basal sheaths. Flowers: Lateral inflorescences appearing as continuation of the stem. Fruits: Capsules. Flowering: May–August.

Distribution and habitat

Chorological type: Paleotemperate. Distribution in Italy: Widespread. Habitat: Marshes, ditches and wet soils up to 1500 m.

Etymology

Generic name (Juncus): From Latin iungo (to bind). Specific name (inflexus): Refers to flexible stems.

Uses and properties

Used in basketry and soil stabilization; not edible.
