Characteristics

Habit: Tall perennial herb 50–180 cm with stoloniferous rhizome. Stem erect, hairy, quadrangular at the base. Leaves lanceolate, toothed, lower opposite, upper alternate. Flowers: Pink-purple, fragrant, with four deeply notched petals. Fruits: Long capsules releasing hairy seeds. Flowering: June–August.

Distribution and habitat

Chorological type: Subcosmopolitan. Distribution in Italy: Very common throughout. Habitat: Wet environments, riverbanks and marshes, up to 1700 m.

Etymology

Generic name (Epilobium): From Greek epi (upon) and lobos (pod). Specific name (hirsutum): Means hairy.

Used in herbal medicine for anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
