The Water Willowherb

Scientific name:
Epilobium hirsutum L.
Common name:
Great Willowherb
Family:
Onagraceae

Curiosities:

A robust species of wetlands, it rapidly colonizes riverbanks, ditches and canals thanks to its fleshy rhizomes, forming dense and stable stands. Its pink-purple flowers, resembling small carnations, have earned it the name “water willowherb” and are highly visited by bees and hoverflies, benefiting from its abundant summer flowering. It is a pioneer of wet habitats, often appearing after floods or soil disturbance, and is considered an indicator of moist, well-watered environments. In folk tradition, some European communities regarded it as a “water purifier”, as it tended to grow where environments remained relatively clean and non-stagnant.
