Characteristics

Habit: Perennial fern with a short thick rhizome. Fronds 20–50 cm, lanceolate and divided, with yellowish glands emitting a pleasant scent when rubbed. Sori circular with reniform indusium. Sporulation: June–September.

Distribution and habitat

Chorological type: South-European orophyte. Distribution in Italy: Mountain areas of northern and central Italy. Habitat: Limestone screes and rocky slopes, 500–2500 m.

Etymology

Generic name (Dryopteris): From Greek drys (oak) and pteris (fern). Specific name (villarii): Dedicated to botanist Villars.

Uses and properties

Highly toxic fern historically used as vermifuge.
